PMAPS2016 International Conference was Successfully Held in Beijing

The 14th international conference on Probabilistic Methods applied to power systems(PMAPS2016), co-sponsored by Tsinghua University and Chongqing University, was successfully held in Beijing Friendship Hotel from 16 to 20 in October, 2016. It was the first time that this international conference has been held in China. Since 1986, the 13 PMAPS conference had been held mainly in famous universities and academic institutions in North America and Europe. Academician Li Wenyuan of Chongqing University and Associate Professor Cheng Lin of Tsinghua University were chairman of this conference, professor Xie Kaigui of Chongqing University was chairman of the technical committee, and the organizing committee also included Professor Kang Chongqing of Tsinghua University and Professor Yu Juan of Chongqing University. This conference received funding from the State Key Lab for Control and Simulation of Power System and Generation Equipments of Tsinghua university, State Key Laboratory of ‘Power Transmission Equipment & System Security and New Technology’ of Chongqing university, IEEE Beijing chapter and Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering.

PMAPS2016 accepted 184 papers, which were full-text collected by IEEE Xplore and were indexed by EI. There were 234 registered representatives from 37 countries and regions, from whom 230 people attended this conference including 4 academicians, 13 IEEE Fellow and 120 foreign experts and scholars from Stanford university, ETH, KTH and Imperial College.

This conference included the guidance curriculum, the general report, the special invited reports, the paper presentations and technical visits and other links.

This conference invited Fellow of Canadian Academy of engineering and the Foreign Associate of the American Academy of engineering Professor Roy Billinton, IEEE Fellow Portuguese Professor Vladimiro  Miranda, and IEEE Fellow Brazilian Professor Armando Leite Da Silva to teach the guidance course about the theory, method and application of reliability.

Professor Xie Kaigui of Chongqing university presided the opening ceremony and made a welcome speech; Professor Roy Billinton introduced the structure and organization of IS as the chairman of PMAPS IS (International Society); Associate professor Lu Zongxiang made a speech representing the organizer of this conference.

This conference invited three international experts to do the keynote Report, including Fellow of Swedish Academy of Engineering and the Foreign Associate of the American Academy of engineering Professor Claes Goran Andersson, Chinese Academician of Sciences Professor Zhou Xiaoxin, IEEE Fellow American Professor James McCalley. They shared views on the opportunities and challenges in the field of power system research, Chinese energy and power development, collaborative optimization and uncertainty and other issues.

This conference invited IEEE Fellow American Professor Chanan Singh, IEEE Fellow Professor Wu Qinghua and other 14 scholars to make reports. This conference had 172 papers discussing on topics of the reliability problem of renewable energy, power system planning and operation of renewable energy systems, uncertainty problem of renewable energy, electrical equipment fault diagnosis and online monitoring, probabilistic assessment and the electricity market. This conference fully presented the latest research results and applications in the field, increased academic exchanges and cooperation in the field of reliability.

Associate Professor Cheng Lin presided the closing ceremony and made a summary speech. Chairman of PMAPS IS Professor R. Billinton announced that he would step down and IEEE Fellow Italian Professor Alfredo Testa would be his successor. Organizing committee of PAMPS2016 awarded Professor R. Billinton a medal of honor to thank him for his guidance and support to this conference; Organizing committee of PAMPS IS awarded Professor R. Billinton a special medal of honor to thank him for his outstanding contribution and lifetime achievement to PMAPS. The conference was the first time to set up Roy Billinton Student Paper Awards in recognition of the contribution of young students and their mentors in this field. After three rounds of the selection, 1 paper won gold medal, 2 papers won silver medal and 3 papers won bronze medal.

PAMPS IS announced at the closing ceremony that, PAMPS 2018 would be hosted by Idaho Power、Boise State University、University of Idaho and IEEE Power Engineering Society, and would be held at Boise, Idaho state, USA on June 2018.

This conference also organized a technical visit of the Beijing Yanqing smart micro grid with the support from the Beijing Electric Power Company. Through this visit, 106 domestic and foreign experts got a detailed understanding of the Beijing Yanqing new energy construction, operation control and a collaborative consumption of renewable energy by a variety of stored energy.

This conference received favorable comments from domestic and foreign experts, Professor Roy Billinton who was the chairman of PAMPS at that time gave a comprehensive evaluation from the conference organization, academic exchanges, volunteer services and other aspects. What’s more, he gave a high admiration as ‘The most successful conference in history’.
